Don’t Scoff

Let’s not scoff when we read here about Michael Vick asking for “forgiveness and understanding” and saying he would “turn my life over to God. That’s the right thing to do right now.”

Yeah, it is the right thing to do right now. God does work in mysterious ways. It’s just a shame that Mr. Vick couldn’t realize the errors of his ways before. Someone with so much talent and name recognition can be such a great influence for good or for bad. The Kentuckian Shaun Alexander, RB for the Seattle Seahawks, is a much better influence on the world than Mr. Vick has been thus far.

The New Attorney General?

Solicitor General Paul Clement will be the interim A.G., following Gonzalez’s resignation. I don’t know much about him, however I have heard him argue Supreme Court cases on C-Span before and I can tell you that he was very good at that. I was thoroughly impressed by his ability to explain the logic and the reasoning behind the U.S.’s position in the case, not that I’m an expert on such matters or anything. He was just impressive, though.

So, was Gonzalez’s appointment a political one designed to get in the good graces of the Hispanic community or not? Was it a good appointment in the first place? I am under the impression that, no matter what the correct answers may be to these questions, Gonzalez was hated for being an Hispanic Republican and that he was even more hated for being a Hispanic who defended things such as the Patriot Act. Regardless, I don’t want affirmative action appointments to offices like this.

See, Democrats want everyone to think that they are the Party of the little man and the minority. So people like Gonzalez, J.C. Watts, Michael Steele, Shelby Steele, and Erwin Roberts tend to get in their way and draw shameful vitriolic hatred from the left.

American Debates Need New Format

I wanted to show everyone this video so you can get an idea of how our debates should be. It’s in French, so most people won’t be able to understand what is being said, but that’s not the point. The point is that each candidate has time to fully articulate his ideas and thoughts. This way, candidates aren’t pinned down by stupid questions from stupid reporters. More importantly, it removes some of the bumper sticker nature of our political system - where images and five second sound bites are all that matters. This way, voters can discern whether or not the candidate is knowledgeable and trustworthy.

I’m not alone in this, by the way. Newt Gingrich just said basically the same thing on O’Reilly last week.

Rudy Or Fred?

I love Fred Thompson. I really do. I think Rudy is as good, though, and I think he can win in ‘08. That’s very important. I don’t think FT would win the general election. I also think FT would make good decisions while in office, but not necessarily carry an agenda in with him that would make a positive difference in American life. Times are changing, folks. Republicans need to be at the front end of the changes leading the way - not playing catch up eight years from now.

I may go into compulsions of elation or something ridiculous if a Giuliani/Huckabee ticket would be formed. That is the best possible ticket for Republicans.

Anon: Not all Republicans have to vote for Giuliani. The majority of the base will, however. Besides them, what matters the most are Independents and irregular voters. Giuliani would get the vast majority of those people. FT wouldn’t get a whole lot of that at all. There are so many Democrats out there who hate Hillary and would never vote for her. We need to present a good candidate who can get those people’s votes as well.

Optimism

excerpt of this article:

BAGHDAD (AP) - The French foreign minister paid an unannounced and highly symbolic visit to Baghdad on Sunday - a gesture to the American effort in Iraq after years of icy relations over the U.S.-led invasion. Bernard Kouchner said Paris wanted to “turn the page” and look to the future.

A top American general, meanwhile, said Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard had 50 men training Shiite militiamen in remote camps south of Baghdad.

Kouchner said he was not in Iraq to offer initiatives or proposals but to listen to ideas on how his country might help stop the devastating violence.

“Now we are turning the page. There is a new perspective. We want to talk about the future. Democracy, integrity, sovereignty, reconciliation and stopping the killings. That’s my deep aim,” Kouchner said in English after meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hosyhar Zebari.

One Candidate WILL End Illegal Immigration

Not only is enforcing the border the right thing to do for the sake of the law, it also helps the government to budget correctly and efficiently for the services it provides.

Time For A Change

I think wannabe politicians need to stop saying “It’s time for a change,” for a change.

How old has this gotten? Besides, is it actually time for a change? What do they want to change? The good economy? Progress in Iraq? It strikes me that the change they are looking for is for government to have even more control over our lives. They want more of our money in the form of higher taxes. They want us to have less choice with respect to schools and healthcare. And they certainly want the U.S. to stop protecting itself from foreign radicals.

Those aren’t the kinds of things I’m looking to change.

McConnell Releases Campaign Video Featuring Alben Barkley II

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell launches KentuckyHeroes.com to tell the stories of remarkable Kentuckians.

Louisville, KY

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, only the second Kentuckian in history to serve as his party’s leader in the U.S. Senate, launched a new website today – www.KentuckyHeroes.com. The site, an extension of the www.TeamMitch.com campaign site, will showcase the stories of Kentuckians who have worked to improve the Commonwealth.

“Kentucky is full of remarkable people – heroes who through their passion and actions are making the Commonwealth a better place to live, work and raise a family. KentuckyHeroes.com will be a forum for sharing Kentucky success stories. The people featured here make Kentucky stronger, and I am proud to know them,” said Senator Mitch McConnell.

The first video released on KentuckyHeroes.com features Alben Barkley II talking about his late grandfather, Senator Alben Barkley, who was the first Kentuckian to lead his party in the Senate.

“I think Barkley was clearly the most important Kentucky political leader of the first half of the 20th Century, hands down,” McConnell says in the video.

Alben Barkley (1877-1956) was a lawyer in Paducah when he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1926. He was reelected in 1932, 1938, and 1944. By 1937 he had been chosen by his Democratic peers in the Senate to serve as Majority Leader. He held the position of Leader until he resigned the Senate in 1949 after being elected Vice President under President Harry Truman. Following his service as Vice President, Barkley was again elected to the Senate in 1954 where he served until his death in 1956.

In the video, Alben Barkley II says, “As Majority Leader of the Senate, my grandfather had a tremendous amount of influence and could get a lot of legislation passed which was beneficial to Kentucky. Many people don’t know that the Cincinnati airport is in Northern Kentucky, and that is because of my grandfather. Legislation brought Kentucky Dam, Barkley Dam, the Lakes area, because of my grandfather, and he could only do that because he was Majority Leader and Minority Leader of the Senate and then rose to the Vice Presidency. And when one is in a position like that they can do great things for their state.”

Of the 67 Kentucky Senators in history, only Barkley and McConnell have become Leader of their party in the Senate. Senator McConnell studied the career of Barkley and gave a major address to the Senate on Barkley’s leadership. You can read the speech at www.KentuckyHeroes.com.

“I think Senator McConnell is in a very important position in his life and in his career right now,” Barkley II says, “He has the potential from this point on to become Kentucky’s next great statesman.”

I Love George Bush

George Bush just said that he recognizes that Democrats control the Congress and, thus, the power of the purse. Then he said, “I also have some power, and it’s called the veto.”

How awesome.
