Ditch Mitch Is Wrong

Cyberhillbilly is right. Their tactics are puerile, vulgar, and base. Plus, they are just flat out wrong about a lot of things.

I was at the little gathering outside the Henry Clay and if it weren’t sad, it would be funny.

Many of the protesters are nearly delusional. They refuse to accept anything other than what they want to be true. Maybe their cause is not absurd, but their tactics and certainly many of their beliefs are.

The Frederick Law Olmsted Conservancy works in the conservation business. I’ll take their opinion on conservation over the radical beliefs of fools who have watched Al Gore’s fictional movie “An Inconvenient Truth” one too many times.

Peabody Plant Comments

The Peabody coal-to-gas plant is a good thing for Kentucky. I just wish Peabody were a Kentucky owned business. Maybe we could get them to move their corporate headquarters here. Doubt it, but it would be nice.

Should the new Louisville arena be called the Peabody Arena?

Having a larger supply of natural gas will be a good thing for the country. Having a gas production center here could put us in the forefront of a developing industry.

At one time, Texas was at the forefront of a developing industry. Look at their great cities now and their mostly conservative governance. Dallas. Houston. San Antonio.

We can make something truly great if we build on this success and use forward-thinking and innovation to try to put ourselves at the top of this new stuff and stay there.

Hope For France

There is indeed hope for France. President Nicolas Sarkozy is a jewel, and he threw pearls at us today.

In an interview taped roughly a month ago Leslie Stahl asked him a stupid question about his personal life, something that has no relevance to governance especially since he has no history of lying to the world and there is no evidence that his personal behavior may be affecting his ability to do his job, and Sarkozy got up and walked out of the interview.

He said it was a stupid question, which it was, and he was angry at one of his employees for scheduling the interview in the first place because he is “very busy, very busy.” He has much better things to do.

I wish more American politicians would tell reporters that they’re asking stupid questions. There may be no stupid questions in elementary school, but there sure are in the adult world.

Ernie Fletcher’s Greatest Accomplishment

Ernie Fletcher’s greatest accomplishment is unmistakable. It is irreplacable. Unforgettable. Honorable. Respectable. Invaluable.

There are 220 more Kentuckians alive today than there probably would have been if it were not for Fletcher’s initiative.

Metabolic testing has been performed on every new birth for a while now. Four years ago 4 different tests were performed on the children, even though 29 tests were available to be performed in order to catch health problems that would likely prove deadly if not detected early.

Ernie Fletcher found 1.5 million dollars in the budget to make these 29 tests available for new babies. With 220 children this year alone, health issues were detected and treated to prevent issues such as SIDS from taking the life of a family’s child.

1.5 million dollars a year is not a lot of money for a state government. But Ernie Fletcher took the initiative and got this money dedicated to this purpose of saving the youngest Kentuckians from senseless death due to treatable health problems.

The lives of these 220 kids are the work of God, but the care that went into getting them treatment so that they may live out a full life with a family is the work of Ernie Fletcher.

220. That’s the only number that should matter to Ernie Fletcher.

An Argument For Ernie Fletcher

I supported one of Governor Fletcher’s opponents in the primary, and I was proud to do so because I felt like the person I supported was a much better overall candidate and had a much better chance of winning the general election and defeating, perhaps for good, the forces of liberalism and mediocrity in Kentucky. However I recognized that the decision was difficult for a lot of people, and understandably.

In the upcoming election, though, the decision should not be difficult for anyone. Ernie Fletcher is a much better candidate than Steve Beshear.

I believe Fletcher’s economic policies have been especially refreshing for Kentucky these past four years. If Steve Beshear is elected and he veers from the economic course Fletcher has set the results for our economy could be devastating.

Ernie Fletcher recognizes the vital role that Louisville plays in KY’s economy. His efforts to act on this judgment, combined with the efforts of private citizens, have produced great positive economic changes during Fletcher’s term in Louisville and in many parts of Kentucky.

The reasons to vote for Ernie Fletcher are definitely there. For people who have been dissatisfied with him, I urge you all to recognize how much better Ernie Fletcher is than Steve Beshear.

Fletcher’s achilles heel may have been that he trusted Kentuckians too much. I believe he may have trusted us to pay attention and discern for ourselves whether wrongdoing was taking place and whether it was affecting the job that was being done. What we did, however, in our busy lives, was pay attention to headlines and to ten second snippets of television. Thorough evaluation has not characterized our judgment of Ernie Fletcher thus far. If a majority of Kentuckians do thoroughly evaluate the situation and vote, he will win re-election.

If he does lose, this evaluation factor will be one cause. However, most of the blame is to be placed on Fletcher himself. Even if his decision to keep mum during the hiring scandal was a result of his overtrusting the people of Kentucky, he should have erred on the side of caution and gotten his face, his denials, and his condemnations of Greg Stumbo and others into the media for Kentuckians to see at least as much as the headlines which condemned him. Would this have affected his ability to do his job? Maybe, but I think in the end everything would have worked out just fine and he would have stood a much better chance of winning on November 6th than he currently does.

Let’s Get This Out In The Open

Ron Paul is not going to be President, ever. All the people who are giving him their hard-earned money are absolutely wasting that money.

Sure, he says something true every now and then, but damn, even a broken clock is right twice a day!

The guy is not serious. If any other of the candidates were saying that they would pull out of Iraq and negotiate with Iran, they would be written off and humiliated immediately. But because this guy is a nutjob who isn’t taken seriously, his little cult following is allowed to fester. Someone needs to put that fool in his place.

McConnell’s Old School Green Policy

Mitch’s Bluegrass Blog has a post up today touting David Jones’ kind words for Senator McConnell. McConnell has done great work preserving Louisville’s Olmsted Parks and conducting old school conservation, which is authentic green policy.

David Jones is the founder of Louisville-based Humana, one of the companies derided in Michael Moore’s latest film Sicko.

Frederick Law Olmsted is probably the nation’s most famous designer of parks and other green space. His work here is wonderful, however his most notable contribution to the world is New York City’s Central Park.

Trey Grayson Raised More Yesterday Than Opponent’s Grand Total

Word is that Trey Grayson raised about $16,000 dollars last night at a fundraiser in Oldham County. It looks like that is just a bit more than Bruce Hendrickson has raised for his entire campaign (around $13,000 probably).

Does that not strike anyone else as just flat out pathetic on the part of Hendrickson? I mean, sure he’s a teacher who did not get the endorsement of the KEA, but still . . .

In all reality, though, it is probably just a really good indicator of how much people love Trey Grayson. You can’t not. He’s a great guy who does a great job. We need more people like him in government.

Dollars, Polls, Endorsements, Pundits

The good people of Texas know conservatism, and most of them simply do not want a Democrat to become President. So who do they like in the 2008 Republican primary?

Texas Governor Rick Perry endorsed Rudy Giuliani today, saying “Executive experience matters for the next president of the United States.” Perry also stated that the next president “must be willing to act decisively to respond to threats without dialing up their lawyers first.”

The people of the Texas, on the other hand, are narrowly choosing Fred Thompson so far in one way. Even though Giuliani leads in the polls, Fred Thompson has received about $1.2 million from Texans while Giuliani has received about $970,000 from Texans.

This supports my opinion that Fred Thompson or Rudy Giuliani should be the nominee, even though most pundits have come to the conclusion that the nominee will be either Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani.

No More No Casinos Tour

I don’t know if this was a deliberate act on the part of the property owners or what, but it seems that about 70% of at least two giant Fletcher/Rudolph signs have been spray-painted to cover up the “No Casinos” portion. I don’t think it was vandalism, because there were other Republican signs closeby that had no spray paint on them at all and both of the Fletcher signs were altered in the exact same way. The signs were located at a heavily-trafficked section of Louisville’s East End.

Has anyone else seen any signs altered in this way?

If they have officially abandoned the “No Casinos” message, I’d say that is very unfortunate for Kentucky because Ernie Fletcher is right on that issue. I would prefer someone to fight the casino interests tooth and nail, however a referendum would not be bad. Even if Fletcher loses the general election, it would be nice if the “No Casinos” message that was launched so clearly and so well at Fancy Farm could nonetheless reverberate in the hearts and minds of Kentuckians.

Sorry for the crappy camera phone picture, but here’s what I’m talking about:

Hillary Will Be Smashed Tonight

Drudge is reporting that Rudy Giuliani is going to unload on Hillary tonight, completely blasting her experience during an interview which will air on Hannity & Colmes.

I look forward to seeing that. Boy, do I look forward to that.

Why It Takes About 30 Seconds To Read The Paper

A lot of the Courier-Journal is simply not worth reading. A lot of it, too, is simply irrelevant to life here. And, sometimes, the articles point out the obvious. For the most part, it’s only worth buying in order to get news about high school sports.

The Department of The Obvious released an article through AP wires recently and it ended up in yesterday’s Courier-Journal.

Headline: Some Iraq deaths unavoidable (duh.)
Subtitle: Official: Militants mix with civilians (really?!)

While I’m glad that the C-J is pushing this information onto those reluctant to hear truth, I feel like this is something that was clear years ago. It is really pathetic the way there is so much information out in the world, and how little of it gets to the people who need to hear it the most.

Yarmuth Makes Fool Of Self

Congressman Yarmuth (D - KY / San Francisco) is making a fashion statement in Congress.

He has a bunch of people wearing buttons proclaiming “Article 1.” He is referring to the section of the Constitution which reads “All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.”

This is supposedly now a rallying cry for tipping the balance of power back to Capitol Hill, away from the White House.

First off, is Yarmuth becoming a strict constructionist? Since when does he pay more attention to the Constitution than he does the the decisions of activist judges?

Secondly, the Democrats need to wear buttons that read “Article 1, Section 7” which addresses Congress raising revenue (aka TAXES). Republicans could wear that one too, though, since that section also deals with the PRESIDENTIAL VETO.

Presidential Endorsements

Former California Governor Pete Wilson and former Wisconsin Governor / GOP presidential candidate / Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson have endorsed Rudy Giuliani.

I wonder who will be the first Kentucky pol to endorse Giuliani.

Does Damon Thayer’s filing of a bill to do away with the Treasurer’s office help or hurt Melinda Wheeler? I thought about it for about ten seconds, couldn’t figure out the answer, and then stopped trying.

Conspiracy Against African-Americans

Remember when Katrina happened and people like Farrakhan and others were saying that Bush and Rumsfeld planted bombs or something in the levies in order to drown the African-Americans down there?

What about this:

American liberals have restricted offshore drilling to the Gulf Coast almost exclusively over fears of oil spills and massive collapse of offshore rigs and whatnot because if anyone’s environment and birds are going to be destroyed by billions of barrels of crude oil, they want it to be the poor blacks’ environment and birds on the Gulf Coast.

Not the East Coast. Not the West Coast. Not Florida’s West Coast. Not Alaska.

Those are their homes and vacation spots.

What nobody will tell them is that there was virtually no significant damage to any of the Gulf Coast offshore rigs during Katrina and Rita. That said, why can’t we drill for our own oil in the aforementioned areas and why can’t we go further offshore?

Why we allow the Europeans to be better than us and embrace nuclear energy while we sit on our hands is a whole ‘nother discussion.
