2 1/2 Examples Of Local Media Bias

1 When Erwin Roberts‘ Army Reserve unit was mobilized and he had to quit the congressional race, the Courier-Journal ran this article headlined “Roberts abandons race for congressional seat.” However, when Andrew Horne surrendered in his bid for the Democratic nomination to be defeated by Senator Mitch McConnell, the good old C-J ran this article headlined “Andrew Horne drops out of Senate race.” Horne would obviously never abandon his supporters, being the good liberal that he is. When reporter Joseph Gerth was questioned about the Roberts headline, while it was acknowledged that he didn’t write it, he defended it, saying “I’m not certain that the headline is all that bad – abandoning, in and of itself ain’t necessarily a bad thing. Folks who abandoned ship when the Titanic hit an iceberg didn’t do anything wrong, for instance.” You can infer from that comparison whatever you want.

2. A couple months ago when Rep. John Yarmuth (D - KY / San Francisco) carried out that really important business of questioning baseball superstar Roger Clemens in the congressional steroids probe as part of his position on the weak Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the C-J ran this fluff piece on Yarmuth’s meeting with Clemens. However, today when Rep. Geoff Davis (KY-4) took part in what will undoubtedly prove to be one of the top 5 events of the congressional year, the testimonies of General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker to the Senate & House Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees, we got nary a word from neither the C-J nor NKY. NKY did run a story today, however, entitled “Rep. Davis bows out of debate.” That was nice of them. The debate they’re referring to is the primary debate KET expects to air no matter what between Davis and his primary challengers who can not be reached. They might want to look in the jails and in the UFOs. Considering one of these guys could be in custody during the debate for allegedly stealing from a charity called Feed God’s Children, and the other has written extensively about his experience of being taken for a ride on a UFO, I don’t think KET really needs to worry about airing this one. The democratic process will survive.

2.5 I don’t really even want to get into WHAS 840’s Francene and her incessant ranting about how she thought local Republican leaders were trying to exert undue influence over who was going to run for Congress against John Yarmuth and who wasn’t, while ignoring the documented facts about Andrew Horne being forced out of the Senate race by Governor Steve Beshear and, to a degree, national Democrat leaders like NY Senator Chuck Schumer.
