Lunchtime Roundup: Brandon Smith Goes To Los Angeles

Food for thought.

Peace Activists Get Violent With Iraq War Vet: Last summer an Iraq War vet was shot in the heart by a lunatic just because he served in Iraq. “An airman from McGuire Air Force Base was in critical condition after being shot by another man who then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide” reported Newsbusters last year. Now, we get this from Gathering of Eagles:

When the veteran’s 14 year old son crossed the street to videotape the protesters and their signs, the protesters became agitated and began harassing the boy. The right to record video in any public venue is long established in law and any attempt to interfere with that right is a violation of civil rights.

Seeing the escalating tension across the street, the veteran and his wife crossed over, leaving their three youngest children on the other side for safety while they went to retrieve their eldest son. Two of the female ‘peace’ protesters then attacked the veteran’s wife. When the veteran pulled one of those attackers off his wife he was jumped by four or five of the ‘peace’ people and knocked to the ground where they held him while beating him and smashing his eyeglasses.

The son pulled the remaining attacker off his mother, but the attacker managed to get in one last kick to his mother’s head with her boot. She then punched the son in his face while his mother called the police.
. . .
When the police arrived they reviewed the video of the incident and then, astonishingly, refused to make any arrests, even when one of the ‘peace’ thugs spit on the 14 year old boy right in front of the police and they did nothing! Officers, that is an assault! I don’t know where or how they train police in Edinboro but they obviously need some refresher courses!

Brandon Smith Goes To Los Angeles: News of John McCain’s visit to Inez, KY made the C-J as well as the LA Times, which basically stated everything Gerth stated in the C-J but added in talk of obesity and, of course, implied that Kentucky Republicans are stupid racists:

The crowd in predominantly white Inez appeared cool toward Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who would be the first African American president if elected in November.

Something that I saw in the LA Times piece that I did not see in local coverage was about State Senator Brandon Smith, whose victory in a special election was the beginning of the end for Governor Steve Beshear. Dig this:

During the Inez town-hall session, state Sen. Brandon Smith asked McCain what he thought of Obama’s recent comments that some Pennsylvanians cling to guns and religion as a result of their economic struggles.

McCain, who later said the comments were elitist, first asked the questioner whether he thought Obama’s comments reflected the views of his constituents.

“I think it reflects the views of somebody who doesn’t understand the views of this neck of the woods,” Smith said, prompting a standing ovation from the audience.

North Carolina GOP Ad Has Already Served Its Purpose: Everybody needs to chill about John McCain asking the NC GOP not to air it’s ad which references Democrat gubernatorial candidates’ endorsements of Barack Obama and his ties to Jeremiah Wright. By denouncing the ad and asking them not to air it, he and the RNC brought attention to the ad and got it a ton of free airtime. That was either on purpose or an accident, I guess, but its irrelevant. The ad has served its purpose. Now McCain needs to go there and support the Republican candidates.

McConnell and Reid Agree On One Thing: I don’t really know what this is all about, but it sure does look unusual. Both Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid voted not to invoke cloture on the Ledbetter Bill yesterday. They both won.

UPDATE: One of my Senate friends wrote to inform me of what this is all about. It has to do with Senate rules that I know very little about. If Reid had voted “Yes,” he would not be able to bring the bill up again. So he voted “No” just to reserve the right to bring it up again later on.
