Across The Pond: London’s Calling

Conservative Mayor of London Boris Johnson news update:

Times Online has a pretty cool piece up called “Boris quells critics with long words and Latin that is pretty awesome. Excerpts:

On the question of tall buildings, Mr Johnson noted that beauty was often in the eye of the beholder. He said that some of his Assembly peers may want to “blow up the House of Commons”, though he conceded that it was probably not for aesthetic reasons.

. . .

Then, questioned at length about the validity of a series of appointments that he has made since his election, Mr Johnson resorted to speaking in Latin. “Speak English,” shouted his opponents.

. . .

Criticised for appointing a series of deputy mayors, Mr Johnson said: “I think the more deputy mayors, the merrier. I think they are a wonderful bunch. I haven’t created new posts. I might have sprayed a few titles around.”

And, Telegraph has “Boris Johnson reveals details of advisers and salaries”. Excerpts:

A complete list of “team Boris” - including brief biographies and interests - was released on the Mayor’s website in the interests of transparency.

The move aimed to draw a line under the secrecy of the Ken Livingstone era, when information about the Mayor’s inner circle was often kept away from the press and public.

. . .

Honouring a pledge made repeatedly during his campaign, he has listed the earnings, responsibilities, interests and even the “gifts and hospitality” accruing from office, of his team.

. . .

Mr Johnson also set out details of the controversial appointment of Kate Hoey, the Labour MP for Vauxhall, who angered some in her own party by agreeing to work with Mr Johnson, a Conservative, as an unpaid adviser on sport.

Perhaps Mayor Boris Johnson should come to Louisville and meet with so-called Mayor for Life Jerry Abramson on this concept of open government.
