This is not really something I have given much consideration to, however Senator Mitch McConnell could make a good running mate for John McCain. Sovern Nation picked up on this recently. What a thrill it would be for McConnell to become the second leader of his party from Kentucky as well as the second Vice President from Kentucky. Alben Barkley held those titles under Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry Truman.
The differences between McCain and McConnell have been myriad and open for years. McConnell even sued McCain over McCain-Feingold, in a case that went to the Supreme Court. What better way for McCain to show intra-party reconciliation than to pick the person with whom he has had numerous differences over the years? The disagreements between the two makes McConnell representative of many Republicans’ views of McCain, and for McConnell to join McCain in the race for the White House would show the seriousness and importance of Republican retention of the White House.
Of course, I don’t really expect it to happen. McConnell is irreplaceable in the Senate, and Kentucky Republicans’ ability to elect a new Republican to replace McConnell is uncertain. Nobody understands the power of 41 like McConnell, and nobody can navigate Senate rules and frustrate Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (D - NV) like McConnell. Not to mention, McConnell himself is up for re-election right now. That’s complicated.
Losing his voice as ours in the Senate would be a tremendous loss for Kentuckians. However, it wouldn’t hurt to have a Kentuckian as Vice President.

He’d certainly be a better prospect than Thompson or Rice.
