The article “Charity work shows another side to Sadr’s movement in Iraq” is a clear-cut example of Sadr utilizing his “humanitarian” assistance for propaganda. What we all must realize is that if Iraqi or American elements are unable to provide help to the people it will come from other unsavory sources. Would we rather support a non-profit organization whose mission is solely to assist the Iraqis without an agenda or sit idle while murderous thugs such as Sadr provides it with the exchange of killing more innocent people?
Since I have dedicated myself to this effort, many people and organizations claim to be pro-mission or say they support the troops. It is easy to say you support something just like people who paste on stickers saying “Free Tibet” but the willingness to get their hands dirty is another story all together. The only sacrifice that has to be made is doubt because by making an investment in our organization, we will be able to provide the tools needed to help Iraq. With these tools available, the Iraqi people will finally have some glimmer of hope that there will be a brighter future ahead.
I ask for you to look deep in your heart and help contribute to “Operation Iraqi Healing” and help invest in a better tomorrow for Iraq and the world.
When Ali Ateya was killed last month at the age of 23_ a victim of an American airstrike on a block of concrete tenements in Baghdad’s Sadr City slum, according to his family — there was no money for his burial.Within days, two officials from Sadr City’s main humanitarian organization showed up at the family home. Unsolicited, they offered to pay for Ateya’s Shiite Muslim burial service and provide food for three days of ritual mourning.
Then they handed the parents an envelope. It was stuffed with 500,000 Iraqi dinars — about $400 — and on it was printed: “A gift from Sayyid Muqtada al Sadr.”
