The Strongest Republican Challenger In The Country

I think everyone is starting to note that of everyone who could potentially turn the House Democratic tide back and beat a Democrat incumbent Congressman this year, Anne Northup (KY) {website} may have the best possible chance. I think Northup is the strongest Republican challenger in the country, being well-funded ($460,000 in 8 weeks), well-known (served in Congress for 10 years & just lost in ‘06), and well-liked in Louisville. If you want a Republican to beat a Democrat incumbent in 2008, you need to give money to Northup for Congress and then come to Louisville and do volunteer work for the Northup campaign this fall.

Rep. John Boehner has already pledged support for Northup via his Regain Our Majority Program. She’s getting help from anti-abortion advocates. Now, three young GOP Congressman are doing what they can to help Northup take the seat back from Rep. John Yarmuth. Yarmuth is a former journalist, the Founder of a weekly alternative news magazine, and currently a Director of Planned Parenthood of Kentucky. Southern Political Report has the nugget:

GOP’s Young Guns Back Five Dixie Challengers

Congressmen Eric Cantor (R-VA), Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Paul Ryan (R-WI) have formed a GOP team to provide financial support to Republican challengers and candidates for open seats in this fall’s elections, reports The Hill newspaper. Among the 17 challengers selected for Young Guns’ support are five Southerners: Rick Goddard in GA8 (vs. Jim Marshall [D]); Lyle Larson in TX23 (vs. Ciro Rodriguez [D]); Anne Northup in KY3 (vs. John Yarmuth [D]); Pete Olson in TX22 (vs. Nick Lampson [D]); and whoever wins the primary in FL16 (vs. Tim Mahoney [D]).
