GOP Chair: “REPUBLICANS PROVED RIGHT “

Press release from Jefferson County Republican Party Chairman Brad Cummings:

Republicans won a decisive victory yesterday in the debate over how to solve our energy crisis when President Bush removed the executive moratorium on offshore drilling. Despite much Democratic griping to the contrary, the market responded to this action with oil dropping as much as $10 a barrel and experienced the sharpest single-session decline since 1991.

“There is no doubt that Republicans are right on this issue and yesterday’s market reaction only further cements our argument,” said Jefferson County Republican Chairman Brad Cummings. “Despite a mostly symbolic gesture by the President, speculators immediately responded to what they perceived to be the potential writing on the wall. Imagine what would happen if our Democratic Congress finished the deal and completely lifted the moratorium. If investors believe we are serious about finding our own solutions to this energy crisis, they will respond accordingly.”

“I am tired of hearing John Yarmuth, Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama repeat the disconnected viewpoint that lifting these bans will not affect the market for 10 years,” Cummings said. “I would advise that they take lessons in how the market works, perhaps even speak to a speculation expert or two. It still might not be too late to flip on this issue and keep their political obituaries from being written prematurely.”

Fortunately, Jefferson County has several candidates and officeholders with the understanding necessary to lead us towards the most fiscally and environmentally responsible solutions for our energy future.

“Senator Mitch McConnell and Anne Northup have been on the forefront of this issue since their campaigns began, understanding how to bridge the gap towards our eventual energy independence,” Cummings said. “Even on a local level, State Senator Dan Seum filed legislation that would allow for low speed electric cars to be driven on Kentucky roadways. On the flip side, Democrats seem to be entirely focused on possibilities that won’t be fully realized for 15-20 years. While alternatives are the future, the average, hardworking Jefferson Countian will not be able to financially make that transition without affordable energy prices in the meantime. John Yarmuth may be able to afford to buy a new car or add solar panels to his home at a drop of the hat, but most of the people he claims to represent cannot.”

“It is clear that the Republican plan for our future of drilling for our own oil, controlling our immediate energy future and eventually transitioning exclusively to renewable energy solutions is the right plan for Jefferson County.”
