The perpetually cynical can make fun of Doug Hawkins after his every move all they want.
He knows what he’s doing. He knows what matters to the people in his district. He’s a much more savvy politician than he gets credit for being. He’s apparently a genius at earning free media. He relates to his constituents. People trust him.
While some pretend that Hawkins is out of touch on a number of issues including, most recently, the bomb storage issue, the simple truth is that most people in his part of the county are grateful to him for standing up Jerry Abramson. They agree with him on that issue and most other issues that Hawkins gets made fun of for taking a stand on. That’s why he is considered such a threat to Louisville Democrats.
It doesn’t make sense to store bombs, gun powder, fireworks, or nearly anything else on top of a reservoir that constitutes the drinking water supply for maybe 1/3 of the county. It just doesn’t under any circumstances, regardless of how “safely” some people predict the materials can be stored. Accidents happen. Buildings deteriorate. Maintenance gets overlooked.
Drinking water is one thing that shouldn’t be risked. Liberals know that. If it were a Democrat taking the stand Hawkins is, there would be little disagreement. Louisville’s Democrats are too cynical and scared of Jerry Abramson, though, to recognize the simple fact that Hawkins is right.
This is why Hurricane and I got our picture taken with Hawkins at the Louisville Young Republicans meeting tonight. I don’t know why I look so tired. (Doug, sorry, you blinked in both of the pictures sort of. I chose the best one.)
