More Talks With Yarmuth

Rep. John Yarmuth (D - Bitter Kentucky) holds little talks around town when he is in town during breaks from Congress. I went to one last week at 4th Street Live! (that’s just the title of the place, it wasn’t that exciting). I asked him a few questions during the talk, but I was easily outnumbered about 35-1, with liberals at a clear advantage. However, afterwards I did get to talk to him one on one.

Namely, I was bothered as to why so many people in the crowd could thank him for getting responses from him on things they had asked his office about. I, as you know from reading this blog, have sent numerous things to his office and have not received a single response. He apologized, way behind, etc. I reminded him that Anne Northup’s office always responded and that I hope I wasn’t being ignored because I was a Republican. He promptly gave me his personal email address, so I will let you know if the response rate increases.

I did ask him about 2 things.

  • The Iraq War comment from his fellow Democrat from PA that stated the Dems lied to the American people during the 2006 elections - When I told him who made the comment he sort of half rolled his eyes, as if he realized he was showing an adverse reaction and didn’t mean to let it slip.
  • The report I mentioned here about House members spending $700 + cars to drive around. While he and I both agreed that members should spend money to lease a vehicle for business purposes, he was somewhat speechless on the issue of how much to spend and the perception of a taxpayer paying for a member’s Lexus or Cadillac. He also would not comment on whether he would work to limit the amounts spent my House members. He did illustrate how he has a small TV in his office, while other members have large TVs and he then asked me if I really wanted to get into that level of oversight.

My response? Well, sir, when it comes to taxpayer’s money, yes, I do want that much oversight.
